Everything on one page

Save these five cheats and you’ll beat most beginners you meet.

How does the game start?
White moves first. Set up like this: back row from corner — rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook. The queen sits on her own colour. Pawns fill the row in front. One square to remember: “white queen on white, black queen on black.”
How do I win?
You checkmate the enemy king — attack it so it can’t escape, can’t block, and can’t capture the attacker. No checkmate, no win: if no legal move exists but the king isn’t in check, it’s a stalemate draw.
What is castling?
A once-per-game king-and-rook move that tucks your king behind a wall of three pawns. Neither piece has moved, no pieces sit between them, and your king isn’t in or passing through check. It’s the only move where two pieces move at once — and it’s a player’s best friend.
What is en passant?
The trickiest rule: if a pawn jumps two squares and lands beside your pawn, you may capture it on the very next move as if it had moved one. It only lasts one turn — miss it and it’s gone forever.
What is checkpoint first?
One rule beats all: never leave your king foolishly. Every move has duties — get pieces out, protect the king, control the centre. Beginners who remember this win more than they lose.
